A transition between paradigms

We are living through a period often described as a polycrisis or metacrisis: a convergence of ecological, social, technological, economic and institutional pressures that can no longer be understood in isolation. Beneath many of these pressures is a deeper fracture in how modern systems relate to the living world. Nature has been treated as an externality, a resource base or a series of discrete problems to be managed, rather than as the foundation of human resilience, intelligence, health and prosperity.

At the same time, this context is giving rise to a new generation of fields, practices and technologies. This is where the opportunity lies, because moments of crisis are also moments of transition. Old models designed for the old paradigm are increasingly insufficient for the kinds of ideas, technologies and systems now emerging, while new models are not yet fully formed. They will not simply appear on their own. They can be strategically stewarded, coordinated and shaped by those with the foresight, resources and commitment to act.

This creates a narrow but significant window for funders, investors and institutions: the chance not only to back promising solutions, but to shape the conditions under which entire fields mature.

From backing solutions to maturing fields

If novel fields are to fulfil their potential, they need more than enthusiasm and capital. They need grounded strategy, ecosystem mapping, realistic assessment and careful translation between visionary ambition and practical implementation.

The opportunity is not only to fund new solutions, but to shape the systems that allow those solutions to become legitimate, coordinated, ethical and effective.

For funders, investors and institutions, this means looking beyond individual opportunities and stand-alone due diligence to ask a different set of questions. What is the state of the field? Where is coordination missing? Which actors are essential but under-resourced? What infrastructure would allow credible work to scale? Where might capital accelerate progress, and where might it unintentionally deepen fragmentation?

This is the work of field-level strategy, helping institutions understand emerging domains before they harden into markets, categories or funding trends. It requires mapping the ecosystem, identifying leverage points, assessing readiness and translating complexity into practical pathways for action.
